SHAKESPEARE CLUB.

The annual meeting, of the Wellington Shakespeare Club was held at the Arts Club rooms, I3owen Street, last evening, Mr. H. E. Nicholls presiding. In presenting the annual report, I\lr. W. D. Gorhain, hon. secretary, briefly alluded to the work done by the club last year, including public readings of two of Shakespeare's plays, and to the satisfactory progress made in Shakespearean readings by the pupils of the secondary schools. The judges spoke in high term's of the quality of these readings. Mr. Gorham stated that he would be unable to undertake the work of lion, secretary this year. The statement of accounts showed a small credit balance of £2 Gs. !)d. There were outstanding liabilities amounting lo .£2l. There were, however, some subscriptions to come in amounting to J:5 15s. Gil. Jn moving the adoption of the report, the chairman said it was evident the club was not on the upgrade. If new blood were not introduced, and new methods adopted, he was afraid the club could not go on. He would regret very much if the club ceased to exist. Miss Holmes, in seconding tho adoption of the report, also regretted the present position, and. expressed a. .strong hnpo that the club would be continued. Messrs. W. W. Tanner and C. Mills also commented briefly on (he report. A sub-committee recommended that the club meet once a week at the Arts Club instead of at the Chamber of Commerce, and that Ihe meeting night be Wednesday. This was agreed to; also, that an opeii evening be held evcrv session. The public readings are in future to be thrown open and advertised. Tho practice of reading papers is to bo resumed—the arrangements to be ma* bv the president. Scenes are to bo read —the caste to be chosen tho previous week. The following oilicers were elected— ratrons, Sir Robert, Stout and the Hon. Dr. Findlay; president, Mr. 11. E. Nichclls; vice-presidents, Misses Holmes, Eii°land, and Jlaltby, Messrs. Bock and Bafrtwin; secretary and treasurer, Mr. N. Phillips.
