HUTT AND PETONE NEWS.

(Fi'om Our Special Correspondent.) FAREWELL TO REV. J. D. RUSSELL. The Rev. J. D. .Russell, who, for tho past 13 years, has been viear of St. Augustine's, Petone, and who leaves for tho south' next wee!;, was faro-welled last evening by tho various Wellington branches of tho C.E.M.S. There was a large attendance. During tho evening, Mr. Russell was presented, on behalf of the C.E.M.S. of the Wellington diocese, with a well-filled pocket and autograph book. Mr. Nash, diocesan secretary, who made the presentation, spoke both feelingly and appreciatively of the qualities which Mr. Russell had displayed in C.E.M.S. work. In reply, Mr. Kussell' stated that he owed a great deal to Petone people, for their assistance during" the tiruo that he was general secretary of the C.E.M.S. Ho earnestly thanked them for their beautiful gift. . Musical items were rendered during the evening, and farewell messages wero read from all C.E.M. societies in tho Dominion.

CORONATION DAY AT PETONE. At the invitation of the Mayor of Petone (Mr. J. W. M'Ewan) a number of residents met in the municipal buildings last evening, to discuss the form of procedure to be observed on Coronation Day. Mr. M'Ewan said that, from observations, ho was satisfied that a successful function could be carried out. All the local ministers would bo quite willing to assist. His idea of tho celebration would be to bold a combined religious service on the .Recreation Ground, and to ask for the co-operation of- the united chorus. Tho band had promised to assist, and so also had the fire brigade. After some little discussion, it was resolved that all present form themselves into a committee to arrange for fittingly celebrating the Coronation. The celebrations are to commence at 9?.9 a.m. If a procession was to bo formed it would require to assemble at an early hour. Some discussion took place as to whether it would be possible for the local Territorials to turn out, it having been announced that they had been ordered to Wellington on that day. I'inal arrangements were left in the Mayor's hands, and ho is to report at a meeting next week. MOTOR CHAR-A-BANCS. The motor char-a-bancs, which is being run l>v a syndicate at Lower Hutt, will commence a" regular service to-day. The char-a-bancs will ply to and ,from tho railway station and Taita, via Bellevuo and tlie post office. OTHER MATTERS. A petition has been forwarded from ratepayers-of Lower Hutt to the Minister for Public Works (Hon. R. M'Kenzie), a=kin" him to withold the granting of the necessary Order-in-Council empowering tho Hutt Valley Tramway Board lo delegate its powers to a syndicate "until such time as we can place our position before you." The petition is signed by about 30 ratepayers. . On Saturday next Petone Ladies Hockey Club will play a match against Kia Toa, Greytown. The fixturo will take place at Petone.
