A VALUELESS BANK NOTE.
PASSED AT AUCKLAND WINTER SHOW. A valueless £W noto was passed off as ■jennine at the Winter Exhibition last week and the secretary (Mr. B. Fordyce) has reported tho matter to the police. The ticket-seller who received the note (William Crombie) states that a man came to the -ticket office and tendered what was thought to be a £1 note, at the same time asking for a ticket" for .the show. Crombie handed the man a ticket and 19s. change. The man then said: "That was a- .£lO note I gave you, Mr. Crombie," whereupon Crombie looked at the note and discovered that it was for .£lO. He then handed out £d as the balance apparently due on the note that had been tendered. Mr. Fordyce paid the note into the National Bank of New Zealand, but the bank declined to pay on it. Tho note in question was one issued by the Provincial and' Suburban Bank, limited, Melbourne. This institution, it is said, has not been in existence for some 15 3 - ears. Mr. Crombie states that tho offender was about 27 years of aje, and about sft. ■7in. in height, and was clean shaven and ef fair complexion.
