GENERAL FARMING NEWS.
About 500 entries have been received for inclusion in (he Holstoin ' herd book, which, it is expected, will be published in three or four months' lime. The inspection of the entries lias now commenced, and should be completed early in June, in preparation for the Holstein Association's meeting at Pnlmerston North on Juno 10. Mr. W. J. Lovelock, of Palmerston North, inspected the Wairarapa Holstoin herds on Saturday, while. Mr. Colman Phillips will, this week, visit those on the West Coas.l, commencing at Wanganui and working through' to Hawera and New Plymouth, and then back to Palmerston North. The exceptionally heavy grain tr-'iilic of Southland is shown by the fact that up to the present time nearly 70,f1f!0 more sacks have bsen carried than in the corresponding period of last year, the returns being 523.31S and 470,76-2 sacks respectively, 'states the Southland "Times." For last'week fho returns were giveii at. 50,315 (only 190 fewer than in the preceding week) as against 42,21.1 for the corresponding wcok (if last year (which was 7200 fewer than in its preceding week).
An attempt to 40 bags of jiotntoo.- inli, Vl'eft Australia in' onion bags', which was discovered by the officers ot the Agricultural Department last week, was well planned. The potatoes were enclosed in two basts. Between the inner bass and the outer bags were found a. quantity of onion skins, which bad evidently bec-n placed there with the object of deluding the officials.
