ST. JOHN'S DEBATING SOCIETY.
• The St. John s Literary and Debating Society held its weekly meeting on Friday evening, the subject for discussion l;s----ing: "That the attitude of Labour is hindering the development of this country." This was affirmed by Mr. Lonias, M.A., iI.Sc, seconded by Mr. Millier, and opposed by Messrs. R. L. Andrew and'D. Douglas. The subject provided a spirited debate, there being twelve speeches. The chairman (Rev. Dr. Gibb), in his summing up, placed the first and second speakers as Messrs. Lomas and Andrew, On being.put to.the meeting, the affirmative- was carried by a small majority. The subject for the next meeting will be: "That more attention should ba devoted to general culture, and refinement -in , the training of the New Zealand youth."
