SPEECH THAT RAISED A STORM.
WAIHI FOLK ANGRY. (By Telcgraph.-Prcfs Association.) Wailil, May 27. Intense indignation is felt in Waihi at a statement reported by the "Southland Times," Invercargill, its having been made by Mr. I'oole, M.P., at a No-Licenso rally an Sunday last. The statement in question was to the effect that, at one time, Waihi was n queer place, and it w.is not .safe for women to walk the streets there. This assertion is regarded as a gross'aspersion on the men of the town, and old residents characterise it as "absolute iiction."
