NOTES AND COMMENTS.
GREAT NORTHERN MEETING.
Tho running at Wnngamii lias thrown some light on the Auckland Nationals, and several competitors (recent winners and others) are, at tho present time, having their chances discussed. Paisano, 12st. 41b., is a. horse that thrives on a very light preparation, but, during tho last ten days, J. Rao has been making him stand up to some work. Some of his supporters—those who know the Gisborne horse Lost —are filled with dismay at the amount of work he is doing, while- others argue that no horse oan carry 12st. 41b. over two miles and a half unless ho docs some hard work. Wimmera, unfortunately— very unfortunately, ono should say—has gone wrong, and will no£ see tho post, while Compass is very backward, and reports from HiiTvcra say that the time for backing him is more likely to be in August than now. The Native (lOst. 31b.) is in great demand, and Mr. Bull's gelding is thought to be partial to a long course. Hβ is a very game horse, and, on his November Feikling form, he is not badly in. Bully is another horse that has lately been showing a return to form, and somo writers- are. looking to him to repeat his performance of 1909. Auratus, lOst., is hardly ready for such a long race, but ho can bo put down as a sure winner during the meeting, which extends over three days. Little Sol (9st. 101b.) will be suited by tho long distance, and it is a noteworthy fact that tho "two Sols" have recently been backed very heavily indeed. Appin won like a thorough stayer at Wangamii on Wednesday, and, as Waiputerc, who caused him most trouble in the Century Hurdles, is not engaged at Ellerslio, Mr. A. Stuart's horse may be ablo to take matters a little more comfortably in tho early part of the race, and bo have a reserve store of pace for any lato efforts on the part of tho others.
Sol f (list. 121b.) leads the way in the Steeples, in which ho has not a very hard lot to beat. Auckland horses always do. better on their own course than do outsiders, and, year after year, tho race is won by an Aucklandor. El Dorado, Rod M'Grcgoi', and C'ornzon appear to possess better chances than tho others, but there will be timo enough to discuss this race after the intentions of owners become known.
Acceptances for the first day's handicap events at the Otaki Maori Racing Club's meeting close at 5.30 p.m. on.
Monday next. Entries for the Maiden Flat Race and Final Hack Scurry are due at the same time.
Although the totalisator returns at the Wanganui Jockey Club's meeting were far in excess of those for the corresponding meeting last year, they would have been still larger had the officials been able to receive all the money offered. A good deal of money was shut out on both days. However, the mooting was in every way one of the most successful in tho history of tho club, the excellent acceptances secured by .Mr. G. Morse befng an important factor thereto.
.The two petitions circulated in favour of Jockey R. barlow will be considered by the Egmont Racing Club next week.
Lovcll was not sent to Ellerslie, as there appeared to bo no chance of his seeing tho distance out in the Great Northern Steeplechase. Torbelle, Ribstone Pippin, and Castout liavo gone to Ellerslio in charge of J- H. I'rosser. Castout will bo a competitor in the Maiden Steeples.
It. Barlow has appealed to the Taranaki Metropolitan Jockey Club against tho disqualification imposed on him by tho Egmont Racing Club.
R. Hatch had tlio winning mount on Obsono at Oamaru on AVednesday.
L. Traill, .who journeyed to Oamaru specially to ride Turna, was not successful on Mr. Whitney's horse, but had a winning mount on the first day on Mr. J. Buckloy's Wedga. Penates was lame after racing on the first day of the North Otago Jockey Club's meeting. FIXTURES. June 2 and 3-Dunedin J.C. Winter June 3 and 5-Otaki Aluori K.C. Winter.
