A BUMP OFF POINT HALSWELL.
' ADMIRAL AND NIWABU, A small mishap occurred in tho harbour off Point Halswell yesterday morning, when the ferry steamer Admiral, bound for Day's Bay, collided with the Tyser liner Niwaru (6444 tons) under the ■ command of Captain Compton bound for Timaru. Both vessels left the wharf at the same time, and wero running parallel to each other, tho Admiral being on tho right-hand or insido course. . As they neared tho point tho Ulimaroa (inward bound from Lyttelton) turned tho point, and the Niwaru, in order to keep well clear, edged a Jittlo closer to tho buoy off tho point. This (according to a statement made by Captain Williams of the Admiral) necessitated that vessel also to alter her course, and keep nearer to the shore Ho slowed down in order to ■ give -the bigger vessel the right of way, and then brought his j own vessel's head round in order to "shape a course for the bay. In doing so, however, he struck tho Niwaru amidships on her starboard sido. Neither' vessel was much damaged, it being hardly moro than a "graze." Ojio or two of tho Niwaru's places were slightly damaged, and tho bow of tho Admiral was a Jittlo flattened.
After tho incident tho Niwaru returned to the stream, and tho Admiral also put back. Both vessels reported the matter to tho Collector of Customs who will hold an inquiry very shortly.
