EVANS BAY-A BIG CONTRACT.
LET BY U.S.S. CO. Messrs. Crichton aad M'Kay, archiJ toots, of Wellington, havo let a contract to Messrs. M'Arthur and Co. and Messrs. M'Lean and Gray, of Welling, ton (jointly), for tho erection of rather extensive- works for thu Union Steam ohip Company at Evans Bay. Tho contract price is about £21,000, and twelve months havo been given tho contractors in which to complete it. The buildings, which sro to be erected on the steel-frame principle, and encased in corrugated iron, will havo a frontage to the Erans Bay Hoad of 450 ft. by a depth of about- 100 ft., and the sito is on the promontory of land north of the slip. The buildings will contain engineering, boiler-making, and machine-shops, an electrical department, a sawmill, joinery, upholstery, and a boat-building shod, etc. Some idea of tho extent caii be formed from the fact that something liko 500 tons of steel girders, and joists, will bo used. ; . '.'The, .establishment of these . works at Evans J3ay means a rather big thing for Wellington, as a largo proportion of tho Union Company's work, hitherto carried out at Port Chalmers, will now be done in Wellington. Tho company already has an extensivo laundry in cOurso of construction in, tho same locality.
Mr. Crichton lias given the contractors the levels of the site for the new works, and a start has been made.
