MASTERTON NOTES.
4 (From Our Special Corresiondent.) Masterton, 3lay 28. Arrangements for the hospital "ball, which is to be held here on July 6, are veil in train. The object of the gathering is to provide.necessary, apparatus for the local institution. The hearty manner in which the ladies of the district are taking the matter up augurs well for the success of the function. A children's fancy dress ball is to be held on the night following the gathering. Oiiiy 675 voters out of 3415 on the roll registered their votes at the Trust Lands Trust election on Thursday. Singularly enough, the defeated candidate received the votes of more than half those who polled. Speaking at the declaration of the poll, one of the successful candidates ■stated that the apathy displayed in public matters in this town was "absolutely deplorable-" Matters political are quiet, so far as the. Masterton electorate is concerned. I'our candidates have announced their intention of going to the poll, but none of thorn has yet taken the platform. It is reported that Mr. A.,H. Herbert, of Eketahuua, will speak in Masterton at an early date. There is a good deal of speculation in these parts concerning the possible readjustment of boundaries, as a result of the recent census. Some peoplo go so far as to assert that Eketahuna will go into' a northern electorate, that Carterton and Masterton will "be joined together, and that a portion of the Hutt Valley will be included in the Wairara;>a electorate. These are, of course, mere conjecture?. Tho No-License party is conducting an active campaign in the Wairara.pa electorate just now, and "The Trade intends organising against possibilities, ho far as Masterton is concerned, there is very little organiation on either side, people being, apparently, resigned to the inevitable. ' Mr. W. L- Falconer, J.P., a well-known settler of this district, who is leaving for a trip to the Olcf Country, was entertained at a "social" to-night by the settlers of Kaitunn, in which district lie resided for many years. Ho was also the recipient of a useful present as a token of goodwill. . . , Dairy farmers in the Masterton district intend going:in largely this year for the cultivation of maize as a fodder.
