HUTT AND PETONE NEWS.
(From Our Special Corresrendent.) The steps taken by tho' Lower Hutfc Borough Council to compel owners of property to connect with tho sewage system aro proving effective. It is er.pocted, however, that, in a few cases, legal steps will have to bo taken. A movement is on foot in Hutt and Petono to farm an ambulance first-aid class for Isclies. A meeting for that purpose will be held in the ambulance room, Petone, mi Tuesday evening. Some- difficulty was experienced this ■week by tho Lower Hutt Fire Brigade whilst at practice. The men had been on the road some time looking out the fire-plugs, but it was only after a diligent seareh, and a good deal of dragging through the mud that they located them. A complaint will be forwarded to the Borough Council. The second term of tho Petone Technical School will commence on Monday.
A special meeting of the committee, of tho Petone Main School was held on Thursday evening, for tho purposo of considering tho advisability of arranging with the teaching staff and others to organise a concert t« raise funds for an Assembly Hall in the school grounds. The chairman (Mr. D. M'Kenaie) stated that he had mentioned tho matter to the head-master, and he was willing .to arrange tho concert. Within the next month would be tJio most suitable time for- him. Tho hall, if erected, would be used for science and exhibition lectures, for tho annual meeting of householders, and such-liko matters. All money raised would lie subsidised by the board pound for pound. A friend ef the school had also offered to organise a bazaar after tho concert, to supplement the proceeds, so that, with the money they raised and tho board's subsidy, they would have a very substantial sum to begin operations with. The cost of the building would bo about £400 or £500. Mr. Hill was of _ opinien that other more important things were required for the school than an assembly hall. Ho wonld, for instance, rather see them go in for swimming baths. It would be little uso holding a bazaar this year, as already there wero two or three bazaars contemplated by other bodies. Other members of tho committee favoured tho erection ef a hall. After further discusion it was decided to ask tho headmaster to proceed with a concert on an elaborate scale, and to await results before proceeding further in tho matter.
