WOODLUPINE MURDER.
THE PRISONER IN PERTH, By Teleeraph—Press Association—Copyright Perth, May 25. The man Smithson, who was arrested in connection with tho murder of a young girl at Woodlupine on May 13, and was captured in tho bush on Tuesday, has arrived here in custody. There were large crowds at the railway station, and / the accused man was subjected to a hostile demonstration. A SHOCKING TRAGEDY. The victim of the murder,. Francis Elizabeth Compton, was the 18-year-old daughter of an English immigrant, who keeps a poultry farm a mile and a half from the scene of the outrage. The girl, who iised to do domestic work for Mr. G. Clark, of the Lands Department, arrived at Mr. Clark's house at 7.30 o'clock on Saturday morning, .May. 13, and was told by him that sho need not prepare any dinner,'as he would remain in Perth till late at- night: The girl went to "a store in the morning, made some purchases, and .tho storekeeper noticed a man of about 25 years of age following her along/the road. Sho was not again seen alive. . A search was begun, and oh Sunday morning black trackers discovered evidences of a strnggle in the bush between Mr. Clarke's houso and the main road, and, following up the tracks, found the murdered girl in a clump of bushes. A red mark on tho neck clearly indicated that she had been brutally choked to death. The murderer- had carried tha body about 60 y.ards to where it was hidden, and the tracks show -that.he, then ran off at top speed. ■■'-...'." .""•<"..{'., ..j'V.,,
