Perfect weather was experienced for the opening day of the Wanaanm Steeplechase meeting, and the racing was the best seen on the course for many meetings back. There was a very large crowd present, and the club's decision to race on successive days has evidently caugnt on. A feature of the meeting was the splendid jumping, and, in the steeplechase, only ono horse (Winchester) failed to complete the course, while both hurdle races ended without mishap of any kind.
Mr. J. Ames; of Wellington, scored two wins by the aid of Lady Kilcheran and Merrivonia. Neither mare was fancied by the public,' and paid good dividends. At the conclusion of the Hack Hurdles, A. Julian (rider of Napper) was called before the stewards, and suspended lor twelve months for unsatisfactory riding. This was the only unsatisfactory incident of an otherwise perfect day's racing. Large fields were seen out in all the races, and the club's handicapper (Mr. 0. Morse) excelled himself in his work.
The thirteen acceptors all went to the barrier in the Borough Handicap. There was considerable delay before the tapes went up, and Simplex and Eclogue were badly left. Te Kahurangi was first out, and, with Mon Ami, led down the back from Faunus- At the half-mile St. Toney joined Te Kahurangi, and this pair led to the bend, where Faunus came on the scene, and Te Kahurangi fell back (the Karamea gelding pulling hard), and won bv a conplo of lengths from Mon Ami, who finished very fast. Vibration, Inland, and St. Toney were all together in fourth place. The steeplechase w.as the best race, of the kind ever seen on the Wangamn course, and the jumping throughout was perfect. In the bird-cage the whole held presented a well-trained appearance. Lovell finished up a very strong favourite, with Corazon next in public demand. Lovell, as usual, showed the way, but today he never got a break on the field, for Winchester and El Dorado were always within a couple of lengths of him. At the first fence, Corona bumped Hegarty out of the. saddle, but ho was quickly back again, and set sail alter the field. El Dorado did not jump as well as usual to-day, but he was game to the last, and tried every yard of the way. To Aral, on whom A. Julian was substituted at the eleventh hour in place of W. Young,.was tailed ofi the whole way, but he jumped well. Eurus was kept on the course,.but, after being prominent for a couple.of miles, he faded out of it. Corazon was ridden, a splendid raco by J. Hercock, _who secured the mount owing to the inability of F, Flynn to get away from the laka-. puna meeting, over the last half-mile. Sir Wm. Russell's horse and LI Dorado were both locked together, and .the fo r rmer ; (getting over the final hencoop) won by a neck. Mount Cook was well back, third, and then came Lovell. Winchester was tho only horse that failed to complete the course. The time was a record,, anu exceeded that of Tilson in 1008 by 1 l-ssec. The Electric Hack Handicap was the next race, and tie public rushed Gold Circle. Tho favourite looked vejy big, and in' want; of a race or two. . He was not on tho trades in the morning, and only cantered the day previous. At tho barrier-rise, Taft and Lady lulcheran rushed out, followed by Kina. The former was soon caught, but Lady Ivileheran led all the way, and won comfortably. Kina was just clear of Gaby, who finished very fast. During the race Tamakoa got put on : the rails, and his rider.fell over on his ears, but, luckily, the horse stopped, and no damage was done. Amaru, who .was second favourite, got badly interfered with at tho start. Gold Circle was in the rear tins whole way. Mallet and Napper were backed in that order in tho Hack Hurdles, but a surprise was in store, 'for Pntrobus, who was handy tho whole way, buried everything for paCD over, the finf.l furlong. Napper was kept a long way out of it, but he finished very strongly, and just beat Zante for second money. The favourite did not jump well, and rapped all his fences very hard. With the withdrawal of Winimera, who had gone sore, JJarton was made favourite in the Century Hurdles. The pace was made by Waiputere and Auratus, both of whom were jumping splendidly. Torbello soon extinguished his chance by getting into the first fence, and, from thence onwards, he was in the rear the whole way. With six furlongs to go Marton, Hvdrant, and Appin were next to tho leaders iii a fairly-well bunched field. Auratus was in trouble at the halfmile, and Appin joined Waiputere. These two jumped the last fenco together, and in a. splendid finish Hercock's mount pot the last stride in, and won by a neck. Hydrant and Marton were next to the placed horses. Waiputere was rather unlucky inasmuch as she gained a length at the lost fence, but Young was hit out of the decision by the superior tactics of Hercock.
Bliss and Cheddar were backed in that order in the Connolly Handicap. The start was a good one, the first to show out being Bliss, who led from Vi, Morrivonia, Ladv Monschikoff, and Cheddar. At the six furlongs post Oliver took M-er-rivonia into second place, and she stayed there down the back and across the bend. At the turn, she was slipped up on tho rails, and won very easily, Gunboat and Bliss being in the places, with Vi and Goodwin Park ahead of tho others, and Sir Tristram last.
The day's sport ended with tho Puma Hack Race, of one mile. Silver Bullet was a hot favourite, and he scored, but it was only by tho narrowest, of Melologue, who got out well, made tho pace very fast, and was only just beaten by the favourite with Floater third and Projectile next. After going a couple of furlongs, the field was strung out badly, and nothing in the rear had a' chance. Projectile finished very fast, and may do better next start. ACCEPTANCES FOR SECOND DAY.
