THE SYDNEY TRAGEDY.
QUESTION OF INSANITY RAISED. By TeleEranh—Press Assbciation-Oopyrlchi (Rec. May '24, 9.35 p.m.) Sydney, May 21. An inquest was held "to-day in conuecHon" with the death of Segal- Bastard, chemist, formerly, of Auckland, his wife Evelyn, and their son, a lad. of eight, whose bodies were found in the"' residence at North Sydney a. few days ago, with poison beside them. .Mr. Williamson appeared for the New Zealand relatives of the family. Dr. Palmer stated that Bastard s brain was the largest he had over seen or known to bo recorded. He was unable to say whether it was such; as to indicate a tendency to insanity. If money had been received from New Zealand, and the* was no cause for worry that would give rise to a strong suspicion of insanity. _ Mrs. Bastard's brothers, in their evidence, stated that they did not know that the deceased was short of m° n «i'A verdict was returned that the deaths were due to prussic acid administered by Segar and Evelyn Bastard. The Coroner stated that he was of opinion that Segar Bastard was of unsound mind. FATAL BOILER EXPLOSION. —— o —: — : MILL ENGINE BLOWN 100 YARDS. By TeleEraon-Press Association-Oopyrieht (Rec. May 25, 0.55 a.m.) Sydney, May 24. A terrific boiler explosion occurred at a sawmill at Trundle, 306 miles west of Sydney, to-day. Parts of the engine were blown a hundred yards distant. One man was killed and two others seriously injured.
