The postal authorities advise that the E.M.S. Aoraiwi, which left Wellington last Friday (May 10), arrived in Sydney too late to connect with tho Melbourne express. The mails arc being.sent forward by one of tho Norddeutecher Lloyd steamers, which left yesterday, and are duo to arrive in Loudon four days later than they would have if they had connected with the P. and 0. steamer.

. The Acting-Minister for Defence (Tho Hon. G. Fowlds) has arranged to receivea deputation on Friday afternoon, which will urge that the kilts be retained in the Highland regiments in New Zealand.

Tho hat and muff worn by Mrs. Melville, of Wanganui, who disappeared on Saturday, were found yesterday on tho river bank, four miles above the town. Foot tracks were discovered leading to the water—Press Association.

The Harbour Board will not observe Coronation Day as a holiday. Last evenin" it considered a recommendation by its Wnarves and Accounts Committee: "That as tho Coronation Day and Prince, of Wales's birthday (a by-law holiday) fall on succeeding days, (lie hoard decide not to observe, the former as a holiday unless it is found practicable to observe tho Prince of Wales's Birthday on Coronation Day." The chairman explained Mat the committee considered it would bo miwiso to dislocate the trade of tho port by observing both Coronation Day and the Prince of Wales's Birthday. Having consulted tho various unions concerned, he considered ithat it would not be possible to observe the Prince of Wales's Birthday on Coronation Day. Tho effect of 'adopting the committee's recommendation would therefore be that Coronation Day would not bo observed by tho board." The recommendation was adopted.

Tho City Council offices were closed at noon yesterday, and the stalT given a half-holiday, in view of the opening of the Coronation Exhibition.

The disposal of the abandoned dock site engaged the attention of the Harbour Board last ovoning. The chairman (Mr. J?. Fletcher) staled that he thought some use should be made of the vacant space. To make the site available for building it was necessary that a wall should be built across the face of what would have been the dock entrance. This being done, the board would have—instead of a deck that would have been an inenbus for many years—a .fine b.uilding area that, in a few years, would bo covered with big warehouses. Eventually the board instructed the engineer to prepare an estimate of the cost of constructing a wall across the dock entrance and repairing the adjoining sea-wall.

Ihe Aew Zealand Rugby Union has advised the English Union that in. .the troupo of Maoris now touring under Maggie Papakura are a number of Northern Livion players.
