It will bo learned with interest, fays the Sydney "Daily Telegraph," that 35 Irish shirtmakers aro on their way to Victoria under contract to work in a new factory, to he opened in and thai the Federal Government has done what it could to assist in their importation. ' The factory is to be established by Welch, Jlargetson, and Co., Proprietary, Ltd., whoss Australian agents arc Cox and Mailer, of Sydney and-Melbourne, and the girls are to arrive in.about four weeks' time. Recently the same firm established in Melbourne a successful factory for ties. Mr. S. Miller, of Sydney, stated recently that the girls that were being imparted to establish tho factory wore from Londonderry (Ireland), and were coming to Melbourne under contract, for three years. The necessary negotiations with the Federal Government imd been carried on without hitch, and the Department for External Affairs had even cabled the permission to London. The girls were required for a class of work which could not be done by available labour in the Commonwealth. The firm intended to train a large number of Australians in the factory, and would soon, extend it so that it would, with the various departments, employ hundreds.
