The French, barque.,Max, well known'in Australia, rocently. underwent a novel ex-. ■ pcrienco which, in tho - opinion oi an American oxohangc, may assist in the ex- , planation of the mnrine fires reported on the coast of California. It seems .that she arrived at Port Townscnd a Jew weeks ago, and ..the- Friday before reaching o.ors the officers state that between 9 ■ and 11 o'clock on that night the baraue wan enveloped in "St.Elnio's fire," while a little north of Eureka; that far to the southward they, could see. two other vessels which glimmered like, glow-worms in tho distance, while again to'the. west, anothor vessel'affected'by tho strange phenomenon hove in . sight. It is most-unusual for the fire to ' appear -in such a latitude,, and the old mariners could, scarcely believe their eyes. "'When'tho'phantom: fire 1 made its'first : appearance ; tin.r" sparks as - from electric bulbs-broke out at-thc trucks of ; tho inasW '. and, and spluttering, made their 1 way along' the rigging and shrouds to the rails. All the crew was called to the deck to behold . tho strange illumination. Tougues of flame, now blue and again dazzling leaped along the rails of the barouo and outlined ,hor hull and riggine in ghostly Are. Then lights began to dance upon tho water, and as tho Frenchmen looked across ■the sea they saw a will-o'-the-wis.p atrsport on' the deck and rigging of two "other vessels to tho south, while further out to soa a fourth fireship glowed through tho dark. After two hours a thunderstorm ■ drove'away-the sprites. '■"•' It is a wonderful story—if true. THE NEW LAUDERDALE. - Af tor a .voyage of over 13,000 miles, without sighting land; the Maoriland.Steamship Company's now steamer Lauderdale unex-1 pectedly arrived at New Plymouth on Mon-! . day .afternoon. An effort was made to signal Hobart, but no notice was taken. One vessel was spokon, but its name could not bo distinguished, which was to havo reported the Lauderdale at Adelaide, The actual steaming ■ time was 59 days 12 hours, averaging about 9.5 .knots, and much shorter than was anticipated, as it was thought she would, not arrive here before the 31st. The Lauderdale is a modern vessel of about 2000 tons dead weight, and is con- ' sidered up-to-date.
