THE CENSUS FINALS, ALMOST.
TOTAL GAIN OF 114,000. (By Telegraph—Press Ascociation.) Christchurch, May 23. The Hon. D. Buddo, at. Oxford last evening, gave a public meeting which he was addressing some particulars of the census totals for New Zealand. Ho said I hat there were some returns still to come from both islands, but; they were not exaected to materially affect the results. The figures given were:— North Island—Present returns, Sf3,3OG; 1900 census, ■173,805; increase, 09,501. South Island—Present returns, 131,248; 1900 census, 330,098; increase, 35,150. Tho total Dominion population to date is therefore 974,564, and the to tnl increase, sinco 1906, a 114,650. [Tho above figures do not include tho returns of one county in the South Island and three in the North. It will be seen that the total population is 25,000 short of the million, and it is just possible that Hie contributions of the four counties will prove insufficient, to enable the million mark to bo passed. It must, however, be remembered that all the above figures are only approximate returns.]
