HUTT BOROUGH COUNCIL.
_ The Hutt Borough Council met last everiing. Present: Councillors Hawthorn, Jfoots, Clendon, Hobbs, Hodgins, Ball, Knight, and Kempthonie. In the absence of tho Mayor (.Mr. E. P. Bunnv) Councillor .Hawthorn presided. Mr. C. Harper intimated that he would act as assessor to the council at. the revision of new valuations at the Assessment Court on June 5.
Mr. J. Jenness wrote stating that, in consequence of extra work in connection with the post office clock, his charges for attention during the ensuing vear would be .C2O, or .£5 in excess of tho fee charged last year.—Agreed to.
Tho Hutt Park Committee forwarded a resolution passed at their last meeting, asking the Hutt, Pefonc, and Eastbourno Councils for contributions towards the cost of re-erecting fences 011 tho proper boundaries, tho Hutt Council's sharo-to be ,~Gs.—Held over.
Sir. P. do J. Clcre renewed his application for a new lamp on the old. Military Road. Resolved to inform Mr. Clero that tho council was unable to alter its former decision. -
The Napier Borough Council advised that a largely-signed petition had been before them praying that tho exhibition of moving pictures 011 Sunday evenings should be prohibited. T'hcv wish to know whether tho Hutt Council had had such a matter before it.—lleccived. The AVaiwetu I'ootball Club w;roto that they would be prepared to pay .£2 for the use of one room on the local recrea-tion-ground for training purposes. It was decided to grant the request on condition that tho club pay a fee of A letter was received from Mr. C. Harris (w;ho contracted for the council's X 0..2 Section of drainage works) stating that he had been under a misapprehension regarding tho work, and he asked for a refund of his deposit, ,£25. It was decided that tho council retain the deposit.
Mr. Ballinger referred to a notice served on him to connect with the drainage system and asked that he should be granted exemption on the ground that his property had, for tho past six years, been draining into a septic-tank.—Engineer to report. Dr. Purdy reported several cases of scarlet fever in the borough. Councillors Baldwin, Barlow, and Macaskill were asked to retain their positions as representatives of tho council 011 tho Itutt Park Committee pending tho council's consideration of its estimates.
Mr. Coverdale wrote, intimating that he was prepared to hear half cost of kerbing and channelling the footpath in front of his residence in Bridge Street.—AVork ■to bo proceeded with.
Mr. Leo drew attention to the fact that turf_ was being removed from tlw street leading to Mellinj's Bridge.—Engineer to report.
Mr. M'Beath wrote, expressing the opinion that the work of draining Heath swamp could be done at less cost in summer than at tho present time—Resolved that Mr. M'Beath make his own arrangements to carry out tho work, which, however, must be done at once.
The Works and Finance Committee reported that the metalled portion of Rossitcr Avenue was much higher than other parts, and recommended that tho high part be cut down threo or four feet, provided that the sel tiers .who use the road erect a wire fence along tho side of tho road.
Councillor Hawthorn announced that this had been agreed to by the settlers, and the cost of the road would not exceed XlOO—Resolved that the sum be placed on the. estimates, and ail agreement .be entered into between the council and settlers.
The committee also recommended that the lamp near the bridge in Riverbank Street bo removed, the final position to bo determined by the engineer.—Agreed to. Tn reference to Routley's dedication, tho committee could not see its way to recommend the offer being accepted.—lt. was decided to uphold tho committee's decision.
On behalf of the Finance Committee. Councillor Hawthorn reported that he and the engineer had purchased a Tangvo engine at a cost of eElOa. The committee recommended that a clerk from the town clerk's office bo transferred to tho engineer's office, and a junior cleric bo appointed to the town clerk's office.
The engineer reported tha.t thirty chains of sewer had now been laid in ITautana Square. A start had been made with (he Eastern drainage. House connections in Wainui and Tsikau Avenues were being proceeded with." Certain improvements, as instructed, were being carried out at (he pumpiug-station, and it was probable .that tho pumps would be in working order next week. Ono connection had been made with the gas main, and <six with the water mains to date. Two hundred and thirty-nine permits under the drainage and sanitary by-laws had been issued, >and .of these, 231 were in me,.
