BUTTER AND CHEESE AWARDS. (By Telegraph—Press Association.] Auckland, May 21. The cheese championship shield at the Auckland Winter Show has been won by the Grey.io\vn Dairy Company with 2i9.5;l points. Xgairo was second with 271.68 points. The butler championship was won by the Matakana factory, and tho Heddc-l Cup by Cambridge. GENERAL FARMING NEWS. Good progress is being made with the Otago Agricultural and Pastoral Society s building, and tho committee is hopelul of opening the winter snow early in August—possibly on tho Ist, says I , riday s "Otago Daily Times." it -is proposed to form an egg circle at 'Woouvifle. The supply of milk at the Ballance Dairy Company's creamery at Scarborough is between 800 and 000 gallons for two days' milking. From now on the creamery will run on Saturdays, Mondays, and Wednesdays. Tho daily milk supply at tho'Konini butter factory, is between 1000 and 1100 gallons, reports an exchange. The Nireaha Dairy Company is holding a meeting of shareholders this month to discuss the question of method of making chec-se—whether it should be by wages or contract,: states a writer in the Ektitahima "Express." Cow-testing was touched upon at Captain Young's lecture at Tarata (says the Taranaki "News"). The opinion was expressed that the average farmer of today, had no time to experiment too much in breeding. He must make up his mind which breed he will depend on. Then, having selected tho best cows in his herd, either by means of the Babcock tester or by the more primitive but still satisfactory test of setting the milk for cream, ho should use tho iiuest bull procurable of tho breed.he has decided on, .getting one with proved butter-fat qualities. After having this head of tho herd for two seasons, he should be got rid of, and another procured of the same breed and of ' the siime strain/ if possible, taking care, of course, that there shall be no in-breeding. The process being repented with the "heifers, tho best being saved, the farmer will soon have a milking herd, •iot exactly purebred, but still of a pronounced typo with good blood predominant. To breed from grade cattle, unless some such system is adopted, would be to court, trouble aud failure.
