An important step towards tho establishment of naval works hero has, I learn officially, been taken by the conclusion of a contract between the' If arbour Commissioners and the Vickers Company, of London and Barrow, undeiwhich tho naval construction firm named secures under most favourable conditions thirty acres of land in the heart of the city for the new naval works which the firm have arranged lo construct. Included in the comprehensive scheme is a floating dock to take merchant and war ships of a displacement tonnage of 27,000, a basin for accommodation ships being fitted out or repaired, and extensive workshops. The floating dock is to be built at onco at the firms English works, and will, it is hoped, bo ready next season for the accommodation of the largest of tho ships failing up the St. Lawrence. For nearly a year tho Harbour Commissioners hayo had estensivo excavating operations in progress for the preparation of the site, , six largo dredgers and various land excavating machines having been continually nt work. Building operations and the construction of the masonry walls will commence almost immediately. . • .

In addition to the favourable terms conferred by the authorities here, there is arranged for in connection with the new dock a subsidy, to bo continued for thirty-five years, of 31 ncr cent upon a total outlay of three million dollars. The authorities and people of Montreal aro gratified that such an important cdncern as tho Vickers Company should by means of this contract be so closely identified with the new naval ambitions of Canada.
