« ■ THE ARCHDEACONRY OF LONDON, APPOINTMENT OF CANON HOLMES. The Bishop of London has appointed the Rev. Ernest Edward Holmes, Honorary Canon of Christ Church, Oxford, to be Archdeacon of London and Canon of St. Paul's Cathedral, in tho place of Dr. W. M. Sinclair, who will vacate the office on June 30. The new Archdeacon was born ill November, 185-1, and is therefore in his fifty-seventh year. He entered Lichfield Theological College in 187-1, and was ordained two years later to the curacy of Rugeley, under tho late Prebendary Crier. In 187!) he hecame Domestic Chaplain to the Bishop (afterwards Archbishop) of Cape Town, and in 1534 entered upon his work in the Diocese of Oxford. In that year he was appointed Domestic Chaplain to tho then Bishop-of Oxford (Dr. Mac-harness), and in 1888 he continued in tho same capacity under Bishop Stubbs upon his translation from the See of Chester to Oxford. In 1805 Bishop Stubbs made him an Honorary Canon of Christ Church, Oxford. In 1901 Canon Holmes was appointed to the vicarage of Sonning, Berks.. During the live years that lie has been in London, Canon Holmes has been in much request as a preacher. He has often hern selected to preach at St. Paul's, especially at Ordinations and during Lent and Advent, and also at Westminster Abbey. He has served as Commissary to the Bishop of St. Helena, anil to tho late Archbishop of Cape Town, and was Boyle Lecturer in IHO3. His lectures which were given in Lent last year at All Saints', Margarrt Street, as a course of instruction, have been published under the title of "The Church: Her Books and Her Sacraments." . Canon. Holmes is also the author of "Immortality" (Oxford Library of Theology), and other hooks. He is the editor of Appendix I in Bishop Stubbs's "Registrum Sacrum Anghcainini"; he also edited tho Ordination Addresses and Visitation Charges of Bishop Stubbs The new Archbishop(says the "Guardian") will undoubtedly bo a great acquisition to 'the preaching | power"of St. Paul's, and his spiritual experience in dealing with indiyi-1 duals will enable him to utilise to tne full the opportunities which exist m connection with St. Paul's for special ipinistrations to nurses, men and women and young people engaged m business and others. His work as Domestic Chaplain to Bishops abroad and at Homo and his experience as a .parish priest give him every qualification for the business side of his work as Archdeacon.
