THE GLADSTONE BIOGRAPHY.

Congratulation's (snys tho "Westminster Gazette") to our contemporary tho "Daily Chronicle" on the success of its interesting adventure into the realms of book publishing, which has been so successful that it is able to announce that, save a hundred copies or so, tho "People's Edition of Morley's 'Life of Gladstone' " is now sold out.

In making this announcement, not without very pardonable pride, the "Chronicle" gives detailed figures abouttho sale of the "Gladstone" since it was first published in October, 1003. Of the original throe-volume edition, 37,000 sets were sold (10,000 in America); of the two-volume edition at 10s., 10,000 sets; and of the "Chronicle's" ■ twovolumo edition at us., 50,000 sets; the gross return from all being £105,200. It is told of Lord Morle.y that, when ho had .finished this great life, ho was asked by a friend over Mr. Andrew Carnegie's hospitable tablo at Skibo Castle, "Aren't you glad it's done?" Lord Mcrloy's reply was, "Yes, I'm very glad—and very lonely." Thajt loneliness—Lord Morley's sense of having lost the company of his great hero for the second time —has meant, however, tho introduction of many thousands of people of all classes to an intimacy with tho great English statesman which they could never have attained but for this book; and all .who hold the memory of Gladstone in reverence, will rejoice, with our contemporary that its public-spirited enterprise has been crowned with abiding success.
