THE TURF.
NOTES AND COMMENTS, [Bt Gleicoe.] Owners are reminded that acceptances for all events on the first day of the YVanganui Jockey Club's meeting close at y.30 p.m. on Monday, with tho club's secretary, Mr. \Y. Hall. In tho handicaps for the South Wairarapa Trotting Club's meeting, published yesterday, in the President's Handicap "Alhvood, 9sec, Fashion, 92CC," should read "Alhvood Fashion, 9scc." By next Thursday's steamer for the south tho St. Ambrose horse St. Felix is to bo sent to Dunedin to take part in the Wingatui fixture on June 2 and 3. The bay horse is ovrned in the south, but, since he joined tho Porirua stable, eighteen months ago, his owner "Mr. J. Brett" has not seen him run.
Tho Porirua quartet of jumpers, Lovell, Castout, Ribstono Pippin, and Torhelle, were sent to Wanganui on Thursday, and, yesterday morning, wore schooled there. The flat horses from tho same stable were railed north on tho following day. As C. Jenkins will bo unable to do tho weight, and L. Traill will be at Oarnnru, tho last-men-tioned horses will be ridden by F. Moagber.
Doubts aro expressed in many quarters as to whether Wimmera will be at his best for tho jumping beforo him at Wanganui. It is stated that, prior to tho Hastings fixture, he had not been given a jump since he last raced over obstacles. Be a horse ever so well, he requires schooling even if ho is a good jumper, and it can hardly bo said in tho Merriwec gelding's favour that ho is anything above tho commonplace in this direction. There are niuo fences in tho Century Hurdles, and a faulty jump may be tho difference between winning and losing.
Tho Hawora horseman, C. Cochrane, who headed the list of winners over fences two seasons ago, is this year occupying o very rearward position, and sooms unable to get up on anything with-a winning chance. Cochrane is ono of the luckiest riders in New Zealand, for, during the many years that he has been, riding over fences, he has never had a serious accident, though, as in the ease of all riders of jumpers, ho lias had innumerable falls. Another well-known horseman who has a similar record is P. Johnson.
Koran is reported to bo jumping in great stylo at Waverler, and the Pilgrim's Progress gelding will mako his initial appearanco over tho battens in tho Hack Hurdles at Otaki. Those who have seen him school declare that ho is a splendid jumper, and it will require something rather good to "go" with him. Other new horses for hurdlo honours at Otaki arc Captain Bell, who is to be ridden by the light-weight Wallace Young, and tho Awapuni-trained Overheard.
Tho Gold Reef gelding, Goldemar, has been purchased from Mr. G. P. Donnelly by Mr. 0. Morse, owner of To Arai and Birklinc. The gelding, which had been turned out for a long spell, is now at Awapuni, under tho care of F. Porter.
Auratus, who contested tho principal flat race on both days at Hawera, presented a very burly appearance, and can havo little prospect of success in the Century Hurdles at Wanganui, in which he irill be ridden by F. Coleman. The Gold Reef gelding pulled up quite sound after his races, and will bo much benefited by them, but his present appearance suggests that the time for supporting him is more likely to bo at Riccarton in August. Tho Karamu two-year-old, Elfbolt, is 'liow'boing trained by G. Dolaney .at HWit.'! The Birkenhead gelding ' was' acquired by that trainer after tho recent Hastings fixture, and will make his first appearance in his new owner's colours at the Winter meeting of the Wellington Racing Club. Elfbolt's only success to dato was in a soven-furlong raco at Waipukurau on Easter Monday, when ho defeated a very poor field. Soultiform, who has started favourite in his last five races without scoring, is nominated in the hack events at the Duncdin Jockey Club's Winter meeting next month. F. Flynn went to.Auckland after the Egmont .meeting, and will ride Whakawoira in the hurdles at Takapuna to-day. He leaves Auckland ou Sunday night, and will be at Wanganui tho following, day in time to give Corazon a final jump before the big steeplechase on Monday. C. Emerson is riding Cheddar in the Connolly Handicap at Wanganui. Tho same horseman will also have the mount on Winning Post in tho sprint race. Tho Auckland crack jockey, A. Whittaker, rodo two winners at the Egmont meeting, and then returned north to fulfil his usual retainers at Takapuna to-day. While doing his preliminary on tho second day at Hastings, Rangiatua collided with another two-year-old, and, though this mishap did not prevent him from winning, he developed soreness afterwards, and was very lamo after the train journey home to Palmerston North.
Bully has been scratched for the Empiro Handicap and tho Hauraki Hurdles at tho Takapuna Jockey Club's meeting. As he was unable to go under the standard, Jack Delaval will not bo a starter in the Pony Handicap at Takapuna to-day. The Auckland champion, Master Soult, was very lame after doing a gallop at Ellorslio on Thursday morning. . Bluemount, Captain Paul, and Montigo set out for a schooling gallop over five hurdles at Ellorslio on Thursday morning. Tho trio fenced in good stylo till they came to the hurdle past the mile and a half post, when Montigo slipped along tho rail, and crashed into the fence, knocking himself about considerably. His rider (Jones) escaped without injury, but tho horso was badly cut about, and (says the Auckland "Star") tho mishap will probably prevent his fulfilling his early engagements. ; Okaihau and King Hippo are both reported to he shaping well in their schooling essays over big country al Ellerslie. The Takapuna Jockey Club's winter meeting opens to-day, when the principal ovent to bo decided is the Empire Handicap. 0-. Price leaves Awapuni for Wanganui to-day, and will take with him Kilo9teri, Ny'land, Boanerges, and a two-year-old gelding by Soult. The first two only will carry Mr. Highdcn's colours at" the meeting. Boanerges has engagements at both Otaki and Auckland, but it is nob yet stated whero he will compete on June 3. The Soult gelding goes to Wanganui for educational purposes. J. M'Laughlin went through from Napier to \Vanennui yesterday, having in his charge tho steeplechaser E! Dorado, and Gold Circle On tho same train were Cheddar, and tho Century Hurdles' candidate, Wimmora. FIXTURES. jfay 20 and 24—Tnkaimna J.C. Winter. MaY 24 and 2.l—Wansanui J.C. Winter.
