Tho deluge, which was in evidence here for several hours last night, slackened after midnight and, to-day, thero has been little rain. Tho surface water in the town has disappeared, and tho streets have their normal aspect. In tho country tho rivers overflowed, in places, flooding tho low-lying parts, but no extensive damage is recorded. The Tuki Tuki llivcr was as InVh at Clivc this morning as it was in tho 1897 flood, being within two feet ot the deck of tho bridge. The road is under water at Clive Grange and,, towards Napier, the Tntackiiri River broko through tho Mooaneo hank, and flooded that locality, but not to tho samo extent' as on former occasions. \t Havclock a block in a creek caused "a good deal.of. damage. One settler lost considerably through his fences boin<* washed away, tho grass-seed, sown"on a largo paddock, being destroyed This is the class of damage that has been done in other flooded areas, tho stock liavinc apparently escaped. Tho rainfall for the past 24 hours was just under six inches.

A h'cavv south-east swell, probably raised bv'llio galo which has prevailed on the east coast of the North Island (Inri)io- the last few days, has been running into Lyttelton Harbour since vesterdav morning A sea was broakjiH' heavilv on liio south side of the harbour last night, and was also running high'along i'ho eastern breakwater. The Moana and Mararoa encountered a- biff southerly swell on their way down from Wellington last night, and were both held back for about two 'hours. So far there has been very little wind at Lyttelton, and the barometer iias been steady, but with a slight, downward tendency. _ A light wind from the southward this morning brought rain witli it. It was a very cold snap: conditions seem to indicate an impending fall of snow.
