FRIENDLY OVERTURES.

PUBLIC SCHOOL RUGBY. A NEW MOVE. A special meeting of (he Wellington Public Schools Kugby Union was held on Tuesday evening last when Messrs. S. S. Drown, W. i'erry, and J. Burns attended as delegates Iran tho Wellington Kugby Union in further reference to tho bituntiou created by the Schools Union's refusal to admit the Marist Bros. School to the public schools' rugby competitions.' Mr. itobert Darroch presided over the meeting, which was attended by about 20 delegates from the various schools in the union. Mr. S. S. Brown, on behalf of tho Wellington lhigby Union, submitted three propositions: (1) "That .the Wellington Rugby Union should take over tho management of the Schools Union; or,' (2) "That the Schools Union should affiliate with the Kugby Union; or, (3) "That' as many us was possible of the teachers in the Schools Union should form a committee to assist the Wellington Eugby Union in establishing a Saturday competition for tho boys. He said that it was tho chief desire of tho Eugby Union to see all the boys playing Eugby. These propositions were not entertained. Mr. A. M'Kenzie (Schools Union), in the course of soino pointed remarks, reminded the Kugby Union that it had permitted tho uso of insulting expressions, such as "rotten football" and "rotton sports" concerning the Schools Union in its deliberations upon • the Marist Bros. School difficulty, and desired it to ■be mado perfectly clear that such expressions were strongly resented. They desired to remind the Eugby Union that the Schools Union had provided , many fine players—the speaker instanced certain schoolboys who had subsequently had a brilliant career on tho football iield—but the standard of material was not so high as it was in bygone years in New Zealand, for the simple reason that there was now no seventh standard. Hence, senior school Eugby players were two years younger in the field "than the boys of some years ago. Mr. M'Kenzie concluded with the observation that the Wellington-Kugby Union had been asleep, and had allowed "soccer" to get a strong hold on the boys. Mr. F. A. Hemplcman (Schools Union) supported the previous . speaker. Tho Schools Union, ho said, had grown in size from seven teams to over' twenty (cams, and, he pointed out. more of the public schools ' were • playing organised, "soccer." The age limit for the Fifth Class Eugby competition was too old for tho public school' boys, and a gap therefore existei between the senior grade school Rugby and the lowest existing grade under the Wellington Kugby Union. That gap ought to have been bridged, but the Eugby Union has missed its opportunity, and the "soccer" people had stepped in and captured tho boys. The Eugby Union had asked the Schools Union to supply a reason for their refusal to admit the Marist. Brothers School. They had given their reason, which was quite sufficient. Mr. W. Terry (.Rugby Union) stated that tho term "rotten football," as a description of school Rugby, had been jivon him by one of the teachers during a conversation on the subject. He was prepared to admit that Iho same standard of football could not bo expected from school teams which were two years younger than those which represented the schools before the Seventh Standard was abolished. He referred to the fact that the boys were playing school Rugby on Fridays and "soccer" on Saturdays, and thought that the teachers might see (heir way to assist the Eugby Union to alter this slate of things. Ho could see no chance of the Eugby Union obtaining any voice in the management of school Rugby. Mr. Burns (Kugby Union) slated tha.t possibly his union would have aclcd more judiciously had they discussed the matter previously in committee. It was possiblo that needless offenco had been given. The delegates then withdrew, and, after discussion it was decided to appoint a committee consisting of Messrs. I?. Darroch, F. A. Hempleman, and A. M'Kenzie to confer with the Eugby Union with reference to the institution of a Saturday connection, to be entirely controlled by tho Kugby Union, for boys of the age between the senior school grade and the Fifth Class Eugby Union grades
