PALMERSTON DAY BY DAY.

In connection with the visit of the Sheffield Choir to Palmerston next month, Mr. Hugo Gorlitz was in town yesterday making final arrangements for the afternoon concert which is to take- place here. Mr. Maurico Cohen, conductor of thu local Orchestral Society, will bo a member (viola) of (ho Sheffield Orcliestra. no will, leave for Auckland on June 17, and will take, part in a week's rehearsal for the Dominion members of the orchestra, who aro to accompany the choir on its New Zealand tour. At All Saints' Sunday Schoolroom last evening . Lieutenant Robertson, organii?r of the senior cadet movement, gave an interesting address dealing with particulars of the new scheme. The Rev. 11. G. Rosclier occupied the chair. A special meeting l'or enrolment is to bo held on Tuesday evening next. The annual installation of .W.M. and investiture of officers of Lodge Awahau took place at Foxton last .evening.. Bro. Bradley was installed as W.M. by Rev. Bro. Jas. JloncrieiF, P.G.51., assisted by Bro. J. A. Nash, V.H., who acted as director of ceremonies. , A large assemblage of members of the local W.C.T.U. attended ut the Baptist Church yesterday nftcrnoon, when Miss Stroud Smith, travelling secretary of the Zenana and Bible Mission Society, cave an address. Mrs. H. Mowlem, president of the W.C.T.U., occupied the chair, and Miss Smith dealt with the work carried on by the society, which she represents. Councillor F. J. Nathan has given notice of motion for the next meeting of tho Borough Council that a resolution, by which a fixed charge of £3 is made for tho uso of tho Opera House for rehearsals, shall be rescinded, and each application treated on its merits. The motion is being brought forward on account, of an application by the local Orchestral Society. Tho society considers tho. charge too "heavy. -...:.- ... Councillor Nathan has also given ".notice that he will lnovo thar tho Coronation grant of .£250 from the Government shall go towards erscfinp an annexe for children at the local hospital. Councillor Nathan holds that this would bo much better than expending money on fireworks or other display.
