MASTERTON NOTES.
(From Our Special Correspondent.) Mastertqn, May 1". The local churches are taking an active interest in defence matters, particularly in regard to the senior cadets. Acting on the suggestion of the area officer, corps aro now" being farmed. Mr. B. C. Tsaac, Inspector under the Manual and Technical Instruction Act, has been in Mastcrton for some days. Last night he gave an interesting demonstration of lead-burning at the local Technical School. Seventeen scholars, who had matriculated at the Maiterton District High School, each received monetary grants of ,£lO last, year from tho Masterlon Trust Lands Trust. At a meeting of townspeople this afternoon preliminary arrangements were mado for holding a hospital ball. The proceeds of the gathering are to bo devoted to the purchase of X-ray apparatus for Hie institution. Four nominations wcro received to-day for the three vacant seats on the Mnslerton Trust Lands Trust. Tlio=c nominated are: Messrs. T. B. Miehell. 0. Prngnell, H. C. Robinson, and .1. H. Pauling. The first three tire the retiring members. The election takes place on Thursday week next. A number of olayers from the Masterton Chess and Draughts Club will visit Wellington during Coronation week.
