JERUSALEM TREASURE HUNT

• *• GOVERNOR RECALLED. By Telegraph—l'reos Association—Copyrieh? Constantinople, May IG. The Governor of Jerusalem, Subie Bey, has been recalled, in consequence of the alleged profanation of the Mosque of Omar by Captain Montague Parker's treasure-hunting expedition.

When tho. Young Turkey revolution took pjaco in IMS it occurred to some enterprising Englishmen that tho very special feeling evoked by the event in lavour of-England might lie turned to account in connection with the continuation of the oxcavations which were begun in tho Holy, City in the, sixties of last con--tury. Enough had been done to show that the outlook was very hopeful, and.it wns impossiblo to say what interesting finds might be made. The syndicate was composed of Earl Fitzwilliatn, Captain Parker, and other well-known men in London society. Earl I'itzwilliam has long been an enthusiastic treasure-seeker 1 firman, or authorisation, to excavate and Jerusalem and tho neighbourhood Was obtained from tho Turkish Government, and Captain Parker headed tho exploring parly. The new excavators started with the great advantage of having the pioneering work dono for them by scientific specialists, and they had only to continue on the fame lines, provided funds were available. As a matter of fact, these enthusiasts were treasurehunters rather than archaeologists. Captain Parker and his friends have had the friendly assistance of the Turkish officials, and every possible aid to success. It is . unlikely that the treasures spoken of were in the mosque of Omar, for if they had been there the Crusaders would have plundered them when they stormed the city in 1099; and again, when tho Saracens, under Saladin, retook (ho city, the treasures would not have been spared. If treasures have been found they must havo been deep underground in tho old tunnels excavated through the solid rock, and they may be. regarded as genuine. In that case their interest is simply incalculable.
