MUNICIPAL ACTIVITY AT MIRAMAR.
;— <y EXTENSIVE WORKS. During the recent election there was a good deal of talk at'Mii'amar over the width of one of the roads, but little solid talk as to what was 'actually being done in the borough. The public do not know, for instance, that within six months the greater part of Miraniar will bo reticulated for water—and it. is not a baby area to reticulate. The storage reservoir, which is being constructed in the hills near tho Seatoun tunnel by Sanders Bros, is almost finished, and tho big supply main for the city is'already laid irom the city boundary, along Broadway, to tho reservoir. Tho reticulating main has been laid from the resc; voir along Broadway, and branches are now being thrown out up the Miramar flat, and out to Seatoun. The Miramar Council will, in about four months' time, bo advertising for residents to connect up with the nearest sections of pipes to the reservoir, and thereafter tho system will spread and spread until the whole of the flat is a network of pipes. "I would go as far as to say," said the Mayor of Jliramar (Mr. J. Brodie) "that the main should be round to Karaka Bay within four months. One of our first considerations must be to reticulate down to the Jliramar. Wharf, so as the steamers can get all the water they want instead of having to come into Wellington. There are too, the gasworks in that neighbourhood which will welcome a high pressure supply as soon as it can be laid down. The Gas Company has already started erecting a portion of their office accommodation, and will make a start with their new works as soon as the .wharf is really. Under the old agreement with tho Gas Company, we were to connect its works with the wharf by tramway for the carriage of coal and other material. To the cost of laying down, tho company was to pay ,CGO(>, and the borough was to find the rest of the money, retaining on its behalf the right to charge a royalty of Id. per ton over all goods carried over tho tramway, the aggregate not to be a less amount than ■£10(1 per year. Since then it has been decided that it would be advantageous to lay down regulation tramway rails (the same as are used in the borough and in Wellington) instead of railway rails ns originally intended. This will increase the cost of tho work to over .£IOOO, but it .will make the section part of the tramway system, and when tho occasion arises trams will be able to run through the cutting on to the wharf." Good progress is being made by Mr. Dillon with the extension of the wharf. Mr. Pulley has almost completed his (Harbour Board) wall-building contract, which makes such a vast improvement to the foreshore immediately south of the wharf, and Messrs. Sanders Bros, will not be worried much longer over tho enlargement of the cutting which has proved an ill-fated work. This is another work which is being done by the Harbour Board under an arrangement with the Borough Council, the Gas Company, and the land companies with holdings in that vicinity. As some measure of return for the construction of the new sea-wall, the opening out of the cutting, and the extension of the wharf, the parties named have to pay the Harbour Board the sum of .£;">000,' in five annual payments. The first payment is due next month.
