RANDOM BULLETS UP THE RIVER,

(By Telegraph.-S B eeial Correspondent.)

n ,• , , Wanganui, May IG. beoa made of extreme- \ " cklcss shooting on the part of deer stalkers a few mi cs up the river, where thee are generally a good number of guns out during the season. Each small party acts independently, and,o equen y, it is said bullets are flyin-r frequently in unpleasantly close proximity to other parties, and some narrow escapes are reported. Another grievance of sportsmen is the way in which some stalkers are indulging in tho wanton destruction of does and fawns, and it is stated that, if this goes on as at present, it will bo only a question of time wlien there will bo no more deer to shoot borao time ago a certain number of ratepayers residing in tho outlying part of \\ anganui East and whose property is mostly grazing land forwarded a petition to ■Wellington praying to bo cut off trom that borough. The Government, however, has so far taken no/iiotice, and these people, though (so it is stated) they will havo their .request' granted' in duo course, find themselves in the position of having to share the legal responsibility of tho loans recently authorised, whether Ihey are cut off from tho borough or not. Last evening they brought the matter under tho notice of the Wanganui East Council, with a view to seeing what relief could be offered. The council has referred tho question to its Einancc Committee.
