"SPOILS TO THE VICTORS."

4 A SOUTHERN COMMENT.

The Hon. E. M'Kcnzie's remarkable proclamation of the Government's belief in the "spoils to the victors" policy, which was dealt with in an editorial in last Saturday's Dominion, is the subject of comment' in Monday's Christchurch "Press." ft concludes its article as follow-; -.-— i We have no fault to find with Mr. M'Kcnzio far to bluntly describing the principle which guides his policy. His statement lias at least the merit of unblushing clearness. It does not, it is true, agree (|uite closely with his claim that iho Government "did not rare two straws about political parties in the matter o( granting the public money." Hut wc do not pretend to try to reconcile two such conflicting statements; that task will be attempted, no doubt, by the Ministerial apologists who exercise so much ingenuity in trying to explain away the "faux pas' which now and then brighten the otherwise rather tedious and prosy utterances of certain Ministers. We fancy that trunk avowal, "People who vote tor us, 1 am wilh them," will stick in the public memory long after tho explanations are torgotten.
