SCOTTISH SOCIETY.

__ Members and friends of the AYellincton Scottish Society gathered in large numbers at the New Century Hall last evening, when memories oi the far-away Land o' Cakes were revived in "Scottish History, Song, aud Story." to quote the title of the programme. Mr. A. B. Thomson, chief .of the society, presided, and delivered a patriotic address, in the course of which he traced the development of the national character under the stem influences and hardy conditions of the country in its remoter history. Under these there had sprung up a vigorous, selfreliant, determined people, hi a passing reference to the kilt, concerning which a good deal has been beard of late, the speaker expressed the hope (hat nothing would ever be done to wound the sentiments of the Scottish people with regard to their national garment. Tlie fart that the English Government, had, in the rebellion of the "Eortj-J-'ive" made laws against the kilt vas a striking indication of the strength of that sentiment. Catlicart; a Highland fling and "Seaunfriubhas." by Afiss Daisy M'T.ellan (Piper Air. D. Scott); a recitation by Ala.ior C. D. Alackintosh: and an address on "Scottish Humour," by the Rev. J. Gibson-Smith. The concert' concluded with ".Auld Lan» Sync." Airs. D. Al'Alillan played (he accompaniments.
