MASTERTON NOTES.
HON. J. CARROLL'S VISIT. INQUEST ON RAILWAY TRAGEDY. (By Telegraph.—Special Correspondent.) Masterton, May 15. The annual meeting of the Wairarapa Caledonian Society was held on .Saturday, when the report and balance-sheet, which showed tho society to be in a- flourishing condition, was adopted. Sis new members were elected. Tho salary of the secretary was increased to .£3O per year, and ha was given a bonus of .£lO. Mr. A. M'Leod was elected president unopposed, Messrs. J- B. M'Kenzie, and J. 11. Pauling vice-presidents, and Mr. G. R. Sykes treasurer. A ballot resulted in the following directors being elected:—Messrs. D. M'Lachlan, G. Stewart, R. Cameron, E. 15. Chamberlain, Thos. Wyeth, Robv. M'Kenzie, W. Sellar, G. M'Hattie, J. Georgeson, Alex. Turner. E. H. AVaddingtou, R. Grav, John M'Hattie, T. G. Hoar, and E. W- Robson. . At the meeting of the Caledonian Society, Mr. AY. I/. Falconer, who is one of "the oldest members, was presented with a travelling-bag. Tho Acting-Prime. -Minister (the Hon. J. Carroll) arrived at Masterton by tho mid-day train to-day. Tie was met by members of the Education Board and •School Committee, and- entertained at luncheon by the Mayor. He. subsequently opened tho museum and miniature rillo range at tho District High School. Addresses were given by Messrs. Hogg and A r ile, members of the Education Board, If. Brown (chairman of the School Committee), C. E. Danicll (Trust Land Trust), aud AA r . 11. .Tackson (headmaster). Mr. Carroll delivered a lengthy and appropriate speech, in which ho congratulated tho district upon possessing such splendid educational institutions.
A deputation from the Borough Council afterwards waited on tho Acting-Prime Jlinistcr, and asked tor n Coronation subsidy towards erecting a kiosk on the public'park. Air. Carmll, in reply, stated that he did not know whether kiosks were ou the list, which had heen revised during the last few days. He would, however, forward the list to the Mayor. Air. Carroll leaves to-morrow for Dannevirke, en route to Takapau, where he opens the new post office, on AYednesday. At Eketnhuna railway station he will receive a deputation on school matters, and ho will Tcturn to AVellington on Thursday evening. At: tho inquest, to-day concerning the death of .Tohn Jlontgomerie, who was fatally injured while shunting at the local railivay station on Saturday night, a verdict was returned .of accidental death, >>n blame being attachable to anybody. The interment takes place at Greytown. Frank Al'Kenzio, a young man in the employ of Messrs. Hyde and Co., had a finger' accidentally cut off while at work to-day. The AA'airarapa hounds had a successful run at Blairlogie on Saturday.
