The Victoria, with English and Australian mails on board, arrived at Auckland at 5.d0 yesterday evening. The southern portion of the mail is due in Wellington «.v the Main Trunk express this afternoon.
It will be a week or two yet, slates the Actmg-l'rraiiiT (the lion. James Carroll) before the report of the Racing Commission, is completed.
Some little time ago there was sickness r? -I llome of a t'l'iiicse 'mcrclinut in I , eliding, and, as a result, the merchant's wife had lo go away to a Wellington hospital for treatment. A report gained currency that it was a case of leprosy, but authentic information (says our Fending correspondent) shows th'at it is nothing of the kind. The illness was not due to any kind of contagious disease. _A the performance which was given by the Central Mission Baud in tho hospital grounds yesterday afternoon, the sum of .£3 15s. 2<l. was received in collections for the hospital funds.
The foolball match between the University and Alharubra teams, played at Dunedin on Saturday, yielded .£ll2 net, which sum has l>een given by the Rugby Union as a donation to the fund in aid of the women's ward at the hospital.— Press Association.
A meeting of the Operative Bakers' Union wns held on Saturday evening, to consider matters in regard to tho new award for the trade. The meeting was in camera, and the secretary stated that nothing was to be made public at present.
The, provisional official programme for the Coronation festivities in Wellington will be. forwarded from the Government to the civic authorities to-day. The Hon. J. Carroll lias suggested to the Mjiyor that the procession should commence at the Basin Reserve, with the exception of the military portion, which will assemble at Government Buildings, and join the civilians at the Basin Reserve. The general idea is that the children shall assemble at Newtown Park at 11.15 a.m. His Excellency the Governor will arrive at noon, and a guard of honour will be provided by the Veterans. The proceedings, which will last until 1.30 p.m., are to conclude with a grand march past by (ho troops. ,
The new Wellington North Post Office, at the corner of Park Stroat and Tinakori Road, will be opened to-day. Mr. J. Kerr has been appointed postmaster.

"Wo are aware," ■ states that journal, "that about two years ago the Minister for Railways informed the representatives of the Railway Officers' Institute there were on the books of the Railway Department the names of over'2o,ooo persons residing in New Zealand who would bo glad to secure employment in the New Zealand Railway ■ Department. We are also aware that a little earlier the Department was compelled, to resort to advertisements in the public press, in addition to using other means, to obtain sufficient Suitable applicants for positions in tho clerical division of the service to keep it even decently staffed. It is also within our knowledge that at the very timo Mr. Millar made his astounding statement to the Officers' Institute, any applicant for a position in the traffic branch of the second division could, if 'at all suitable, depend upon receiving an appointment within a fortnight, of first lodging his request, despite the 20,000 prior applicants."

Mason arrested. a man named I\>'.riek Collins, in Lambton Quay on Saturday night, who has been wanted on warrant at Carterton since March !). _On that date he was cbnvicted for taking liquor into a No-License area, but he left the-t'bwn without paying tho fine and costs, totalling £1 lGs. 3d. The default term was a month's hard labour. The opening of the' Knrori tramway extension from the Borough Council Chambers to Karori Park took place on Saturday afternoon. The traffic on Saturday was swelled by tlrt athletes and spectators who travelled to the recreation ground, and yesterday the perfect weather alto induced a number of people to make the ■full journey to the end of the line.
