Williamson, orcliartUst, aud Uitu Government Inspector of Orchards, expresses the opinion, based on forty years' experience of fruit-growing, and experimenting with regard to fruit diseas-ss, that tho Melbourne scientists are mistaken iu attributing tho disease to the codlin moth spray. He says that "bitter pit" is caused by microscopic fungus, and has been common iimoiig apples in the Wanganui district for fifty years. The spores of the fungus are capable of boins carried many miles, and drop upon the fruit, and when paeiced one contaminated apple will ail'rct a whole case in three weeks' time. Mr. Williamson says that when tho spores first appear on tho surface of the fruit a certain proportion ot Bordeaux mixture will destroy it, but after they have penetrated (he fruit spraying" is of uo use.
