BOWLERS FOREGATHER.
MR. CARROLL ON THE GAME. The first of a series of social gatherings which arc to be arranged during the ensuing winter for tho purpose of keeping the membors of the Thorndon Bowling Club in friendly touch with each other until tho longed-for rerommenccment of; play, was held last nifcht 'in the' chair'. ■'■Anion* 'those, present tcok the form of a smoko concert, with Mr. 11. W. Kane, president of tho club, in the chair. Among Rthofae present v.-oro tho Hon. J. Carroll (ActinsPromier), Mr. T. M. Wilford, M.P. (Mayor), Mr. A. L. I-Jerdmau, M.P., r.ud representative bowlers from most of the city and suburban clubs, and members of t-lie Savage Club, who assisted in tho musical programme. During a very pleasant and harmonious evening, tho toast of "Bowling" was pronosed by the lion- J. Carroll, who dwelt upon tho idea that from such a game as bowls might be drawn great lessons that would bo of Talue in building up and strengthening the sinews of nationhood, and helping towards that centralisation of force which would yet keep the Empire on the surface. A day might conic when we should havo to ir.cct in battle array other nations outside tho Emniro circle, strong and aggressive. "Who would lead off on that occasion?. AVho would throw tho jade? that was in tho problematical region, but ho would ask" them to remember that every effort they made to attain greater efficiency on the bowling green would help in a, great process which was as small stars grouping together to add to the power of the solar system of tiio Empire. (Applause.) Mr. J. Keith, vice-president of tho Aorthern Bowling Association, in responding, expressed tho hope that bowlnig throughout the ' Dominion, would shortly be brought under one control.'
