OLD CITY BUILDING.
IS IT HEALTHY?
OWNERS BEFORE THE COURT,
LATE OCCUPIER GIVES EVIDENCE.
■ Yesterday in the Magistrate's Court Dr. M'Arthur, S.M., heard further evidence in tho case in which James Doylo, City Sanitary Inspector, is proceeding against Hamilton Gilmer, of Wellington, for failing to comply with a notice to pull down a condemned building known as Warnock and Adkins, 205 Lambton Quay. The city solicitor, Mr. J. O'Shea, and with him Mr. T. Neave, appeared for plaintiff, and Mr. T. W. Hislop for defendant.
Thomas Warnock, draper (now of Wanganui) said "that' tho firm had occupied the premises for over twenty years. He had first found fault with tho building about eight or ten years ago. Tho Labour Department' had then refused a license for the workrooms. Ho had forwarded the Department's letters to Mr. Gilmer. Tho floors upstairs at that time were decayed, and, until two or three years ago, nothing had been done to them.
Dr. M'Arthur: Were these complaints communicated to tho defendant?—"Oh, yes."
Mr. O'Sliea: What was the complaint in regard to tho building ?—"That it was in a bad state." . ■ ■ .
What was tho condition of tho atmosphere?—"ln somo places it was all right, but in others all wrong." What do you mean by all wrong?— "It was pretty close." '
