OBITUARY. DR. ALEXANDER MAIR.
Another leader has fallen in . tho United Free Church of Scotland, in the person of Dr. Alexander Mair. Dr. Mair, who originally belonged to the United Presbyterians, was born in Ayrshire in 1834. . After graduating with honours in all departments at Glasgow, ho dovoted himself for a number of years to the teaching profession. Ho received his theological training at tho United Presbyterian Hall, Heidelberg and Berlin. Ho further devoted two sessions to the special study of Hebrew at Glasgow. Licensed in 1862, he was called at once to Burton-on-Trent and tct.Stow. Ho chose the latter, and was. ordained there iu 1833. Ten years late- he was called to the newly-formed church at North Alorningside, Edinburgh with which he was associated for vs]] night forty years, and which has grown great under his charge ' Dr. Mair was a niiui of independent views, a conscientious thinker, a fair debater, and an ablo writer. His literary gifts found expression in articles in high-class periodicals, and his volume on "Studies in tho Christian Evidences," which ran through three editions, has been translated into Spanish and TJrdu. x On the occasion of his Ecmj-jubilec,. in. 1889, ..he received many costly "gifts'.'aiid his nortrait by Robert Gibb, 11.5.A. He was tho last surviving of the three Moderators of tho year of Union, 1000, the other two being Drs. Rainy and Ross Taylor.
