NEW ZEALAND'S EXPORTS.
Not very much attention has bsen paid to the monthly returns of exports, and this negligence may ultimately result in a surprise, for the showing is adverse. According to the leaflets issued by the Department of Agriculture, Commerce, and lourists, the values of the principal products which embrace practically all our exports in the aggregate exhibited a decrease of £1,366,280, as compared with the corresponding mouths of 1910, and this shrmkago is equal to 12J per cent. This is a vew serious decline, and arises mainly through the smaller quantity cX wool exported. The figures for each of tho four months compare as under:—
January 3,026,016 2,8«,421 February 2.346,744 2,962.778 March 2/92,318 2,669,221 April 1,459,331 2,213,269 9,324/09 10,630,689
Thero was a fair increase in January, but in each of the succeeding months the shrinkage was substantial. The first four months of 1910 compared with the same period of 1909 exhibited an increase of £2, 352 414, and we fancy the community is trading on the belief that tho figures for this year are equally as good. If the rate of shrinkage shown above is maintained it must lead to trouble. The. decrease, as already stated, is mainly duo to tho shortage in the wool exports, for there has been no compensating advance in values. The exports of wool for the four months compare as under:—
January
1911. lb. 43,765,082 30/56,539 26.106.E66 12,131,857
1910. Hi. 45,459,344 45,075/66 31,175,228 15.521,146
Marph April May .
112,460,141 137,231,184 This discloses a shrinkage of 24,771,0401b., and the loss in money in conscience is £1,295 125. Of course, there are shrinkages in other items, but wool is the heaviest.
