RACING CONFERENCE, • APPEAL BOARD. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) Napier, May 11. The Appeal Committee of the New Zealand Racing Conference heard the appeal of the Tolaga Bay Club against the decision of the Hawke's Bay Metropolitan Committee in awarding the stake in the Bracelet Handicap to Fashion Plate. The club had disqualified Fashion Plate.on tho ground that she was trained by an unlicensed trainer, and awarded the stake to Preston Pans. The Metropolitan Committee reversed this decision, and the club appealed. Judgment was reserved. NOTES AND COMMENTS. [By Glencoe.] - Entries close for the Auckland Racing Clnb's "Winter meeting at the club's offices Shortlancl Street, Auckland, to-night. At the same time acceptances are due for 'the Great Northern' Hurdles and the Great Northern Steeplechase. Owners and trainers are reminded that nominations for all events, except the Maiden Flat Race and the Final Hack •Scurry, at the Otaki Maori Racing Club's Winter meeting, close with the secretary to-night. C. Jenkins has been engaged to ride Marsuma in the opening event, at Jlawera on Wednesday. Mr. R, H. Nolan's mare has Sst. in this event. In the Nursery Handicap at Hastings, Mr. E. .1. Watt is tho only owner with two representatives. His colours will be carried by Royal Scotch and Easy, l.hn latter being a brown filly by Merriwco from Float. Had the weather kept fine, the owner of Merry Messenger regarded his mare's chances in the Hock Hurdles to-day as of a particularly tos.y hue, for. in her work on tho tracks, she had been galloping equally as well as the Cup candidates. However, with tho going on the heavy side, the result of all the races will be nothing more or less than the lottery which some people regard all races to be. Owing to the state of the going, which is very heavy, Bobrikoff is an unlikely starter in the sprint event at Hastings to-day. To-morrow morning, Messrs. Douglas Brothers are-holding a clearing sale of racehorses, and-amongst tho lots to be offered' -is the 'Great Northern ■ Hurdles winner Mcrriwai. At Hastings to-day, Hermia, Forraby, Viu—.tion, each of whom is know'n
to be a good mud performer, will have a large following in the t'ornngnhaii Handicap, lint, outside this trio, there arc no inquiries from the djublr-eveiil operators. The grev colt Mini has been working well on iiie Hailing* trucks ami «»'''- s his trainer considers the going o bo 100 bad, the coll will be a starter in the Maiden Knee to-day. Itoiu wiini has been .ecu of him be appears to be slow in fiiuliiiß bis feet, and tins «;il tell against him in to-day's race in which .some Mimrt 2-vear-olds are engaged. The Levin trainer, 1-. Carmont, has two horses at Hastings, viz., St. He.s, who is engaged in the Maiden, and Auroa, a bav mare by Conqueror, who is one of tho likely starters in the five-lur-long hack race. .Mr. H. W. Patterson, owner of Aion Ami, loft Hastings yesterday, ami will reach Wellington to-day. 1 is "™%\> (hat his mare will bo started at mo meeting. . The Ashburton meeting will be brought to a conclusion to-day. Golden Water is now an inmate of K. Gooseman's stables at Hastings. Jtc was recently purchased by Mr. Jnme* Armstrong, vice-president of the Dan evirko Racing Club, and will make lu» first appearance in his new owner s colours at Hastings to-day when he mil oppose Winchester in the Hack Hurdles. He will bo ridden by J. Hercock. The further postponement of the Hawke's Bay Jockey Club's meeting, rendered necessary on account of the inclement weather, will seriously affect | hat fixture, and, yesterday, a large number of visitors returned home. It has been definitely decided that, whatever thei weather, the meeting will be held to-day and to-morrow. ~ While schooling at Lepperton recently the St. Paul gelding Valentine broke, a small bone in a leg. hut the bone has been set and an attempt will be made to save the horse. • The one-time steeplechaser, Carngan, was sold by auction in Stratford on Saturday for the munificent sum of A 2 os. Le Beau and Loch Fyne were responsible for a useful bit of schooling work at EUerslie on Tuesday morning, the Pair covering a round of the steeplechase country, going over, the hill. Both J«";t'C? perfectly. An Auckland writer slates that Le Beau will not be seen at the Wangamu meeting. this month. Tho yearling colts by Scottish King— Moorooroo and San Francisco-Dismay, purchased at the recent Sydney sales, and now located at Auckland, have gone into F. Stenning's charge to receive their early education. -.
Mr. Theo. Bowling has not yet fully decided whether he will take Antarctic -to Wnnganui or not (says the Auckland "Star"). He would like to make the trip, but the son of Salvadan has been causing a bit of anxiety of late, and it will all depend on his performances during the week. Yesterday morning, after working with Don Quex, ho was a bit tender un pulling up,' Which docs.not augur well for his immediate prospects.
It has been said that of all men an Irishman enjoys the experience of reading his own obituary notice. If that be so, well, then, .Mr. Patrick Butler should be placed .in a happy frame of mind (snys the "New Zealand Herald"). Some few weeks ago a press telegram received from Christcliurch stated that Mr/ Butler had died in Auckland, and obituary'notices of the old-time racing man duly appeared in different journals throughout the Dominion. Tho information received by an Auckland resident who *et inquiries on foot, is to the effect that Mr. Butler is still at an island retreat in the Waihcke Passage. FIXTURES.
