—. 4 WORKERS IN UNHEALTHY TRADES. By Telegraph—Press Associatiou-Oopyrielit. London, May 10. A remarkable provision of the Nationals Insurance Bill is that if friendly societies allege excossivo illness of members owing, to the conditions of employment in cer-j tain trades, shops, or factories, they shall I be entitled to demand an inquiry. If it cau be proved that the. sickness over a] period of three years has been ten per cent, above the average expectation -of J illness, the employers must recoup the/ societies the extra expense. IMPORTANT PROVISIONS. (Rec. May 11, 11.15 p.m.) London, May 11. \ In a memorandum explaining the un> employment insurance scheme, tho defini-' tion of tho word "workman" in tho com-{ pulsory section of tho Bill excludes fore-' men, clerks, and persons under eighteen.! Workmen who are repeatedly "unem-i ployed owing to lack of skill may bo required to attend a course of technical i instruction. ' ' An association giving' unemployment benefits will' receive a Government, eub-i sidy equal to one-sixth of the amount of the benefits given up to twelve shil- j lings a week.
It is stated 1,100,000 workers employed in the engineering trades, and 1,321,000 men in the building trades will coino un-' der the compulsory scheme.
