PALMERSTON DAY BY DAY.
THE WHEELER MEMORIAL. (From Our Special Corrcstoiident.) Palmerston N., May 11. A laymens' missionary movement is to be inaugurated, at the Palmerston Lutheran Church •, on May 25 (Ascension Day); ; Owing to the heavy rain which commenced about seven o'clock last evening, the Salvation Army Band had to postpone the programme of music which ithad proposed to render in the rotunda in the Square. The Rev. Frank M'Donald presided at the anuiial meeting of the Baptist. Church last night, when there was a largo attendance. The chairman outlined the work which had been accomplished during the year, and the secretary reported that the membership was now 120, being ail increase of ''23 for the year. The Rev. Keith Ewcu, of Berhampore, Wellington, gave an address, in which he urged male members of thevcongregation to work as hard for the church as the ladies. If (hey did.this, they would very soon have a new church. During the evening, Mrs. Street, on behalf of the Ladies' Auxiliary .Society, presented the church' with two handsome chairs, for the rostrum and vestry, and a. beautifully-bound Bible. Musical numbers wore contributed .by Misses Pecs,, Baker, Paget', and Messrs. Richardson and Jewett, accompaniments being played by Misses Holbrook and Fiirness, and Mr. J. P. Moore. Refreshments were dispensed by the ladies. The canvassers for the Wheeler Memorial (Messrs. Short, Conway, and Buchanan) are meeting with success in their efforts to raise funds, Mr. Short having just on £500 on his list alone. As previously stated, the proposal is to erect a sheep "pavilion on the Manawatti Showgrounds to commemorate the work which the late Mr. G. C. Wheeler did for the Romncy breeders in particular, and for the 'breed in genera!. Sbeepbreeders seemingly recognise this, and the subscription's arc coming from all classes of breeders. It is suggested to erect a pavilion after the style of that which formed a feature at' the Argentine Show, the front to bo in brick and the back portion wood. It is hoped to have the pavilion an accomplished fact by the time of the the next spring show.
