Colonel Hawkins, Officer Commanding the Canterbury and Kelson Military District, has returned to Christchurch from a trip to the West Ccast, having visited llokitika, Groymouth, the State mines, Ngahero, Recfton, and Westport. In all these places ho found registration goi'iS on satisfactorily. Some opposition has been shown to the scheme in one of the mines, but this appeared to be mere in the way of a grievance with the GovernmenJ for having passed tho Act into law without reference, io tho people, and Colonel Hawkins docs not consider that such opposition will largely affect registration. The cadet system has been taken up enthusiastically in Greymouth, \yhero no defence cadet corps previously cxistedt and it is expected that Hokitika and Reefton will follow ou the same lines.
