MASTERTON NOTES.
(From Our Special Correspondent.) Masterton, May 9. The death occurred at Tiraumea last night of Sirs. John Smith, wife of a very old settler in that district. Deceased, who was well known throughout the AVairarapa, was apparently quite well in tho afternoon. She was seized with a stroke in the evening, and death supervened soon afterwards. The Acting-Prime Minister (Hon. James Carroll) will visit Masterton on Monday next, and open the miniature rifle ranse and museum at the District High School. The AVairarapa E<jg Circle received tho satisfactory price of 2s. Id. per dozen for its last consignment-of eggs to Wellington. The football season will be opened on Saturday next, when the first of tho Rugby Union fixtures will bo plavod at Mn«lerton. Messrs. R. Lee (chairman), A. W. Hogg and .\. 11. Vile, members of the Wellington Education Hoard, will proceed to Eketahuna on Friday to fix a site for the local school on the new grounds. On Saturday, Messrs. Hogg and Vile will hold an inquiry into the fire bv which the Saunders Road School was destroyed.
