PROBABLE." Tew particulars are available concern- ' ing the trial shipment of apples from Nelson s)nt; to London. The shipment went .-••• with Vsmall Government, guarantee, mado in ,the hope of securing' the growers against total loss. The sum guaranteed by the. Government was ,£315, which .was • based on the amount, required .to make good last year. As it is considered probable that there will b9 some losses, Clauses 7, 8, and 9 of the conditions in ■ which ; thc guarantee was made available may'be of intefet. These three clangs' •read. 1 . • "7. The amount 1 guaranteed to. each grower shally be the net return of one penny per pound of the fruit forming ' his part of the shipment. "B..The total amount guaranteed bv the • Government shall, however, not cxceed f ,£3ls (being the amount claimed . in respect of. last year's shipment), and if that sum does not yield one penny per. pound to each grower it will be distributed pro rata according to the amount that would be due to each, grower had tho basis been one penny per pound without the total amount being limited. "9. ;In calculating the amount to bo deducted for expenses, New Zealand 1 freights, and ..wharf charges, also cost of wrapping paper shall be 'taken into consideration, but the cost of the; case and of the labour employed in packing shall not be taken into account." The • statement in the cable that the ■apples'were of excellent quality, but were . badly carried, "many being frozen and worthless," is regarded in Wellington, as indicating that the fruit was carried on board ship at too low a temperature. As to the prices—Bs. to 12s. a casethere is expected to be losses on the lots disposed of at Bs. It is reckoned that Bs. 6d. would have cleared expenses. "In a few years' time." said a wellknown authority, "we will bo able to take Bs. 'a case, but wo can't do it now. When tho extensive areas under young orchards come into full profit we will bo able to accept less money ' than wo need ; i now."
