WHAT ME. CARROLL SAID IX THE . NORTH. '.By Tclegraph.-I'ress Association.) Whangarel, May 9. Mr. J. R. Kirk, of Gisbome, in an interview, repudiated Hie report of a speech attributed to the Hon. J. Carroll when unveiling the llcke monument. The Hon. J. Carroll was reported to hove advised the Natives not to sell tlioir land to (he pakelm, as the Natives would then become tho pakehas' slaves, but to keep their lands, and make the pakehas the slaves ol' the Natives. In point of fact, said Mr. Kirk, Mr. Carroll did not favour keepim: lands locked up, but the reverse. What actually happwicd was that Iho N'capuhi tribe petitioned tho Minister to take slops to preserve their hinds and prevent their disposal. Mr. Carroll replied: "Legislation in that; direction was on (lie Statute Book, hut ■many applications were made (o tho Governor to have the restriction removed, and the lands were disposed of. What win 1 to do?" asked Mr. Carroll. "Today, whi'lo 1 am hero, you want, lnmls restricted; to-morrow, when 1 am away, applications for the removal of restrictions will be forwarded." Mr Carroll added; "I am urped by (ho pakeh.a to acquire Native lands thrown open for selection.
