HUTT BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The first fortnightly meeting of the newly-elected Hutt Borough Council was held last evening. Present: The Mayor (Mr. E. P. Bunny), Councillors Hqbbs, Ball, Stevenson, "Kempthorne, Knight, Hawthorn, and Hodgins. A letter was received from Mr. Manthell, secretary of the Andrews Estate Syndicate, asking that a deposit of ,£BO, lodged as security for the drainago of the Andrews' Estate, bo returned, as most of the sections liad been sold, and the remaining sections had been divided among members of the Andrews' Estate Syndicate.—On the motion of the mayor it was decided not to comply with the request. Mr. J. T. Scott wrote, complaining of an alleged nuisance which lie stated was caused by certain sewage running on to his land.-It was decided that, in tho event of a previous notice not being complied with, legal action should be taken It was further decided to prosecute .1 dozen other ratepayers who had failed to comply with the sanitary by-laws. It was decided to notify owners of bouses in Bandwick Road, White's Lino East, Waimii and Nikau Avenues, Ludlam Crescent, and Woburn Road that their houses must be connected with the main sewer. It was resolved to grant the use of the Recreation Ground to the girls attending the High School on Saturday mornings, and also on two or three evenings of the week. . It was decided (on the motion of Councillor Hawthorn) to carry out some necessary 'drainage works on . Victoria Street and Park Avenue, Alicetown. On the motion of the Mayor, it was decided to authorise the construction of tho southern sewer drain through the Te Momi Estate, in order that persons on the Main Eoad may have an opportunity of connecting their premises with the sewers to the septic tank. The Works Committee renorted that they had visited the site of Emeny's dedication on Saturday, May 0, in company with the engineer, Mi. Coverdalc, owner of the adjoining property, was also present. They recommended that the kerbing and channelling in Belmont Road be carried. right through from the lato MY. Holwortliy's gate to the corner of Bridge Street, 011 tho lines shown 011 the engineer's plan, and the road and footpath bo formed and gravelled, and the fence set back in the usual way. The crossing at the new gate to be erected by Mr.- Covcrdalo may be of the usual type, but as much longer as he requires it, provided that he pays for the extra cost. The kerbing and channelling should be carried down Bridge Street, and the footpath formed and gravelled for a distance of about 350 feet. Mr. Coverdale has undertaken to pay half the cost of this work for a distance of 250 feet. Tho report was adopted. The engineer's report stated that the whole of tho sewers had now been laid in the Hautana Square, a total length of 22 chains, and varying in depth from 9 to i foet, and in cost from .£2O per chain to about £i per chain, but averaging .£ll 3s. per chain throughout for labour. The gang was now working in Hautana Street, where about 10 chains were necessary to connect up all the existing houses. Good progress was being made with tho White's Lino East road diversion. The earthenware pipes had been put in, and the filling carried across the old swamp, though not as yet to the full width. Metalling would begin next week. One connection had been mad-.' with the gas main, and two with tho water mains. The number of water services now totalled .£732. 231 permits had been issued under the drainage and sanitary bv-laws, and, of these, 227 were being availed of. Expenditure for the fortnight ending Anril 20 had amounted to it-271 12s. -Id.

The librarian reported that 982 books had been issued for the month of April, as against 1121 for the -corresponding month of last year.
