SYDNEY LIBEL CASE.
A CRICKETER'S DISAPPEARANCE. By Telegraph-Press Association-Copyright (Rec, May 8, 9.20 p.m.) Sydney, May 8. As the result of an appeal, the damages against the "Sun" newspaper in the Novell case have been reduced to .£125. This was a suit to recover .£SOO for alleged libel. The plaintiff, Amanda Newell, complained of an article which appeared in the "Sun" newspaper referring to the "mysterious disappearance of Andy Newell," stating that the wellknown cricketer was in South America, and doing well at Valparaiso. The information in the article was founded on a letter purported to have been received by somebody in Sydney from Newell. The article contained the following passage: "The writer (Newell) explained at length-the circumstances which had induced him to leave the State—reasons of a domestic character." Tho plaintiff complained that the words convpyed that by reason of her treatment of her husband she compelled him to leave his home and go to South America, and that she was a woman of a bad character, and of a harsh and unlovable disposition, and that she had failed to perform her duties and obligations as a wife. The jury found for the plaintiff for ,£2OO damages.
