Miss Hannah Reid, of the China Inland Mission,. formerly of Christchurch and Dunedin, writes from her station,-Chih-Chow Tatung, China:- Jou will perhaps have heard of the famine that is again so severe in the north of tins province, and of Kiangsce. It is really a continuation of the former famine in these districts. They needed good harvests to recover a measure ot plenty, and have had very indifferent ones, and tins vear a flood again did. destructive work. It is again a vcrv bard year here, too, and will be harder yet, and the poor people are being burdened by band after band of famine refugees from the north. We met one such band outside the citv to-dav. As they reach eacli largo village" or city, the head man, or mandarin, makes term's with them, usually civing them supper nnd breakfast. Thus they tramp from village to village—men, women, and children, but such successive bands of them become a great drain on the already impoverished people."
